This is the most common question we get: "Phi Phi or Similans — which is better?" The honest answer: it depends on what matters more to you. We'll compare both on 5 criteria so you can decide for yourself.
Natural beauty: a draw
Both archipelagos rank among Asia's most beautiful places. Phi Phi wins on cinematic drama: vertical cliffs, turquoise lagoons, Maya Bay — a living postcard. The Similans are different: no celebrity beaches, but a feeling of untouched wilderness, enormous granite boulders and the clearest water in the region.
Snorkelling and diving: Similans win
There is no competition on underwater quality. The Similans rank in the world's top 20 dive sites. Visibility: 20–30 metres, marine life unmatched. Phi Phi is also good, especially at Shark Point and Bida Nok, but the ecosystem suffered from the tourist wave of the 2000s.
If your goal is underwater life, the Similans are unambiguously better.
"The Similans are what the ocean is supposed to look like. Phi Phi is what it looks like in photos."
Logistics: Phi Phi is easier
Phi Phi is 90 minutes by express ferry or 45 by speedboat. First departure at 08:30, tickets available same day. The Similans require 2.5–3 hours from Thap Lamu Pier (60 km north of Phuket). Departure at 06:00, return around 19:00. More physically demanding — but worth it.
Crowds: Similans are quieter
Phi Phi is one of Thailand's most visited sites. By 10:00 in season, Maya Bay is packed with boats. The Similans have a daily visitor cap — the atmosphere is incomparably calmer. The closed season (May–October) also allows the ecosystem to recover each year.
Price: roughly the same
Phi Phi tour with transfer, snorkelling and lunch: from 1,500 THB. Similans tour: from 2,500 THB (due to distance). Yet average client satisfaction scores for the Similans consistently run higher.
Our verdict
Choose Phi Phi if: it's your first trip, you want iconic scenery, you're short on time, or you're travelling with children under 8.
Choose Similans if: you love diving or snorkelling, want peace and quiet, are visiting November–April, and can handle a long day on the water.
Ideally — do both. Many clients do: Phi Phi on day 3, Similans on day 5. Message us on Telegram and we'll schedule it around your dates.
FAQ
Can you do both in one trip? Yes, most tourists do. We recommend leaving a rest day in between.
When are the Similans open? November to May. The islands are officially closed the rest of the year.
Can non-swimmers go to the Similans? Yes — life vests are included and guides are always nearby. But Phi Phi is more relaxed in that case.
