First visit to Phuket: islands, shows, beaches. Second visit: something entirely different. Returning tourists know what they want — fewer crowds, deeper experiences, off-the-beaten-track routes. Here is our list for the "already experienced."
1. Similan Islands liveaboard (2–3 nights)
If you did the day trip on your first visit, this time try a liveaboard. Sleeping on board among the islands, dawn dives before the day boats arrive, a star-filled sky free of light pollution. One of the finest experiences in Asia. From 9,000 THB for 2 nights with meals and dives.
2. Surin Islands — the lesser-known alternative
A national park north of the Similans, far fewer tourists, equally beautiful reefs. The Moken sea gypsies live here — the last nomadic sea people of Asia. This tour is available through our agency — most companies don't operate here. From 3,000 THB.
3. Open Water diving — get certified
If you did an introductory dive on your first trip, now is the time to do the full course. 3–4 days, 4 open-water dives, an international PADI/SSI certificate. The Similans open up on a completely new level after this. From 12,000 THB with equipment.
"People who come to Phuket for the fourth time are almost always divers. The ocean here is such that you can dive for years and always find something new."
4. Ko Lanta and Ko Libong
Islands in Krabi province, 3 hours from Phuket. Unhurried atmosphere, few tourists, mangrove forests, dugongs at Libong (one of the few places in Asia where you can see them). A great contrast to busy Phuket.
5–10. Six more ideas
Ao Thalane mangrove kayaking — dawn in the mangroves by canoe, bioluminescent plankton at night.
Thai cooking masterclass — market visit + cooking + eating your own dinner.
Phuket Town evening walk — street food, illuminated old mansions, Sino-Portuguese architecture.
Elephant sanctuary overnight stay — a rare format, 2 days with the animals, feeding and bathing.
Private yacht for 3 days — your route: Phi Phi, Lanta, Racha — no groups, no fixed schedule.
Spa retreat (3–5 days) — Thai massage, yoga, detox cuisine in the jungle. Best programmes in Kamala and Surin.
FAQ
Is there any point coming to Phuket a 3rd or 4th time? Those who keep coming back are almost always divers or people with a yacht. The underwater world and islands offer endless variety.
What's definitely not worth doing a second time? The standard Phi Phi group tour with 40 people. Did it the first time — that's enough.
