Fishing from Phuket is not sitting on a pier with a rod. It is a yacht or a boat, a run out to Racha Island, trolling on the way and bottom fishing at anchor, and your own catch on the grill for lunch. Here are the two formats in our catalogue with prices, what is included, what bites, and what to do if you are only coming along for the ride.
What fishing from Phuket costs
Both our routes cost 2,500 ฿ per adult and 2,000 ฿ per child for a full day. The price includes the hotel transfer both ways, the boat, tackle and bait, a guide, life jackets, a mask and snorkel for swimming at anchor, lunch on board, water, drinks, fruit and accident insurance. There is nothing to pay on site, except perhaps a beer.
For those joining an angler without fishing themselves there is an observer ticket at 2,200 ฿: the same boat, lunch and snorkelling, just without a rod.
Two formats: trolling and bottom fishing, or big game
Trolling and bottom fishing off Racha. Hotel pickup at 07:45, back around 16:30. On the way to Racha Island the boat runs with lines out — that is trolling, for tuna, barracuda and mahi-mahi. At anchor by the reef you switch to bottom fishing: grouper, snapper, reef fish. In between, swimming and snorkelling straight off the yacht. Lunch is what you caught, with a reserve in the galley if the day was slow.

What bites and when
November–April. The dry season, calm sea, the best trolling conditions. Tuna, mahi-mahi, barracuda, king mackerel. This is when big fish are caught most often.
May–October. The rainy season, with swell from the west. Boats go out by forecast, and the lee side of Racha is calmer. Bottom fishing works all year: grouper and snapper do not care about the season. If a trip is cancelled for weather, you get a full refund or a new date.
The best hours are the morning, which is why both routes leave before eight and fish until lunch, with swimming and the run home afterwards.
How the day goes
A car collects you from the hotel, Chalong pier in the south of the island, a tackle briefing from the guide, departure. An hour to an hour and a half of trolling on the way to Racha. At anchor by the reef: bottom fishing from the boat, snorkelling for those who want it, lunch. The way back is trolled again. By half past four you are at the pier and the car takes you to the hotel.
What happens to the catch
Part of it is cooked on board for lunch: grilled, or as sashimi if it is tuna. The rest you can take with you — ask in advance and the crew will clean and pack it. Most hotels in Phuket will cook your fish for a small fee; ask at reception. Small fish and reef species on the big-game trip are usually released.
What to bring
A brimmed hat and waterproof sunscreen: there is little shade on deck and the sun reflects off the water. Sunglasses — polarised ones help you see the fish. Motion-sickness tablets an hour before departure if in doubt: a fishing boat at anchor in a swell rolls more than one under way. Clothes you don’t mind ruining: fish, bait and salt water. A phone in a pouch.
With children and for beginners
No experience needed: the guide rigs the tackle, shows you how to hold the rod and strikes the first fish with you. Children usually enjoy it from age 6–7; younger ones get bored at anchor. The child fare is 2,000 ฿ and life jackets come in every size. With a large group, ask about a private departure: the whole boat is often better value than six separate seats.
