If you've seen the videos on social media — people racing down a winding track on small open carts, carving corners through the jungle — that's luge. In Phuket they've long been nicknamed "Mario Kart carts". Not because you'll find mushrooms and turtle shells here, but because the feeling is identical: hairpin bends, speed, competitors alongside you, everyone screaming.
What is Luge?
Luge is a single-seat gravity cart. No motor, no pedals. Gravity pulls you downhill along a dedicated jungle track and you steer with two handles: pull toward you to brake, release to accelerate. Top speed is around 40 km/h, but on the bends it feels much faster.
The track runs down a forested hillside — bends, drops, straightaways. One run takes about 5–10 minutes. That combination of serpentine layout and speed is exactly what gave rise to the Mario Kart comparison.
"After the first run, everyone wants another. We sell 1, 2 and 3 rounds — and most people regret not buying three from the start."
Where to ride in Phuket
Currently the only luge facility in Phuket is Hanuman World, 45 minutes from Patong. The track sits inside the park, right alongside the zipline platforms. You can book luge without any zipline package.
Who it's for
Children from age 7 — ride independently (minimum height 110 cm, weight 25 kg+). This is one of the few activities in Phuket where a child gets their own run rather than just watching the adults.
Ages 4–6 — ride tandem with an instructor in Doubling mode. The instructor steers; the child sits in front and gets the full experience safely.
Adults who are afraid of heights — luge involves no height at all. The track follows the hillside at a maximum of one metre above the ground. If ziplines aren't for you, luge definitely is.
Groups and families — launch several people one after another and hold unofficial races. That's exactly how those social-media videos happen.
Pricing and how to add it
Luge is available two ways:
As an add-on to any package: 1 ride — 790 ฿, 2 rides — 890 ฿, 3 rides — 990 ฿. The difference between 1 and 3 runs is only 200 ฿, so if you're going to do it, go for three.
In the Luge 2 + World package: 2 runs are already included along with ziplines and the buffet. If you're planning both ziplines and luge, this package works out cheaper than adding luge separately.
What to wear
No special gear needed. Helmets are provided on-site. Regular clothes are fine, though long sleeves and trousers are recommended — the track can kick up some dust and wind. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (flip-flops will not be allowed).
FAQ
Can I do luge without the zipline? Yes. Luge is a standalone attraction that can be added to any minimum package or booked on its own.
Is it scary? No — the speed is moderate and the brakes are in your hands. 90% of children ask for another run the moment they reach the bottom.
Do I need to be fit? Not at all. You sit and steer. The only restriction is a maximum weight of 120 kg.
Can I film it? Yes. A GoPro on your head is standard practice. The footage looks exactly like Mario Kart.
