Phuket with children is one of Asia's best family destinations. Warm sea, solid infrastructure, short transfers. The key is matching activities to age. Below — our experience from hundreds of families.
Ages 3–5
Good: sheltered beaches (Bang Tao, Karon, Nai Harn), Splash Jungle waterpark in the north, elephant sanctuary in a "feeding and bathing" format (no riding), Big Buddha (a pleasant walking visit).
Not recommended: long sea tours (Similans — 12 hours on a boat), Phi Phi on a speedboat (rough ride), late-night shows (too late for small children).
Ages 6–9
The golden age for Phuket — almost everything is possible. Best tour: Phi Phi or Coral Island — snorkelling with a mask and tube in shallow water, children go wild. FantaSea is perfect for this age: live elephants on stage, fireworks, acrobats. Tiger Park — skip it (the animals' living conditions are not ethical).
"Watching your child see a sea turtle underwater for the first time — that's reason enough to go to the islands."
Ages 10–14
Already genuine travel companions. Recommended: Similans (if the child can swim and is comfortable in the water), introductory scuba diving with an instructor from age 10, Simon Cabaret (teenagers usually love it), ATV tours through the jungle, kayaking in Phang Nga Bay.
Practical tips for parents
Children's SPF 50+ sunscreen — waterproof, apply 30 min before going in the water. Rash guard — sun and jellyfish protection (especially June–October). Snacks in the bag — Thai food doesn't always appeal to young children; bring something familiar. Motion-sickness tablets — for sea tours for any child who is prone to it.
Best beaches for families
Bang Tao — long, calm, no strong surf. Karon — good facilities, cafés right at the water. Nai Harn — beautiful, peaceful, uncrowded. Patong — too busy and loud for small children.
FAQ
From what age can children snorkel? From 5–6 years in calm water close to shore. Sea tours — from 7–8 years.
Are there children's discounts on tours? Yes — under 3 free, ages 3–11 pay 50–70% of the adult price. Confirm at booking.
