Phuket's water is clear, the coral reefs are alive and there are sea turtles — all of that is true. But different spots vary enormously in quality. Here is where to go specifically for snorkelling.

Coral Island (Ko Hae) — the closest option

15 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier. A small island with a white beach, clear water and corals right at the shoreline. Excellent if you want snorkelling without a long journey. Depth: 3–8 metres. Plenty of fish, occasional sea turtles. Tour from 900 THB.

Downside: crowded on weekends. Visit on a weekday or arrive before 09:00.

Ko Racha Yai — the best all-round

30 minutes from Chalong, one of Phuket's finest beaches, cleaner water than Coral Island, richer coral reef. Blacktip reef sharks are regularly spotted here (harmless, up to 1 m long) — unforgettable. Reef depth up to 20 metres. From 1,200 THB.

"Your first encounter with a reef shark at Racha — when you realise it's just swimming past and completely ignoring you — is something you won't forget."

Phi Phi Islands — snorkelling + scenery

The most beautiful underwater views in the region; rich reef at Bida Nok rock and Loh Samah Bay. Caveat: heavy tourist traffic means some reefs near the main beaches have suffered. Going to Phi Phi solely for snorkelling is not ideal — but snorkelling is always included and it is excellent. Tour from Phuket from 1,500 THB.

Similan Islands — the absolute best

If you are serious about snorkelling, the Similans are a completely different level. Visibility 20–30 m, extraordinary marine diversity, pristine reefs. Drawback: a long way (2.5 hrs), expensive (from 2,500 THB), open November–May only.

What to bring

Mask and snorkel (included on most tours, but your own fits better), rash guard, an underwater phone case, waterproof SPF 50+ sunscreen.

FAQ

Can I snorkel without being able to swim? Yes — with a pool noodle or life vest. More comfortable if you can at least float.

Best season? December–March — maximum visibility. From April the water is slightly murkier but still good.
